format the movie was probably presented in at the theater, on a screen that is much wider than it
is tall. Today's latest camcorders can record in either standard (4:3) or widescreen (16:9)
format. Some camcorders can also record in a higher quality, called HD, or high definition, format.
HD takes advantage of both a higher resolution picture quality and the widescreen format.
Create an iDVD project in iMovie HD 6
You can quickly create a new iDVD project from iMovie HD 6, and automatically add the movie
you’re working on to the project. In iMovie HD 6, select iDVD from the Share menu, then click the
Share button. iDVD automatically opens, creates a new project, and adds your movie. iMovie HD
6 even allows you to add chapter markers to your movie before sharing it with iDVD.
Create an iDVD project on a computer that doesn’t have a SuperDrive
If your Mac doesn’t have a drive capable of burning a DVD (a SuperDrive or other compatible
third-party drive) you can still use iDVD to design your DVD. When you’re ready to burn your disc,
use Archive Project or “Save as Disc Image” to move your iDVD project to a computer that can
burn DVDs.
Changing the name of your project
The name you give your iDVD project is the name that iDVD assigns to the DVD when you burn
it. You’ll see this name appear in the Finder when you insert the disc in your Mac’s DVD drive,
and it may also appear on the display of some DVD players. If you want the disc to have a
different name than your project, choose Project Info from the Project menu and type a new name
for your DVD.
Adding a Movie to Your DVD
Once you’ve selected a theme for your DVD menu and personalized it with your own media, it's
time to add movies. iDVD can incorporate both standard (4:3) and widescreen (16:9) movies,
including high-definition video, (note all media formats are converted to a standard definition DVD
format).
Tips
Importing movies with chapter markers
iDVD will automatically create a scene selection menu if you use a movie with chapter markers. If
your movie is longer then a few minutes, consider adding chapter markers to allow your audience
to quickly access scenes throughout the movies. iMovie lets you insert chapter markers when you
create your movie. If your movie doesn’t have chapter markers, you can add them in iDVD. First
add the movie to an iDVD menu. Next select the movie and choose "Create Chapter Markers for
Movie" from the Advanced menu, set how often you want chapter markers to occur and click OK.
iDVD will add chapter markers to your movie and even create a submenu with a Play Movie
button, and a Scene Selection menu to jump to the specific chapters in your movie.
Previewing your movies before adding them
In the Movies section of the iLife Media Browser, you’ll see the title and a small preview image for
each movie in your Movies folder. The title and image help you confirm you’re adding the right
movie to your project. If you’re not sure, double-click the preview image to see a preview of the
movie. Click the movie to stop the preview at any time.
Searching for movies in other locations
iDVD automatically locates any iMovie projects or QuickTime movies stored in the Movies folder
in your home folder. If you store movies in another location, such as on an external hard disk, you
can point iDVD to search there. In iDVD Preferences, click the Movies button, then click the Add
button to choose additional locations. You can also drag a folder from the Finder into the iDVD
Movies browser.
Add a movie directly to your menu
You can also drag a movie directly to the menu to add it to your project. Just be sure you don't
drop your movie into a theme drop zone by mistake.
Adding movies from iMovie or the Finder
Besides adding movies from within iDVD, you can add movies directly from the Finder or iMovie.
From the Finder, select a movie and drag it to an iDVD menu. From iMovie, select a video clip in
your iMovie project and drag it to an iDVD menu. You can also send your finished iMovie project
directly to iDVD by selecting iDVD from the Share menu.
