Checking the telephone line
Make sure your modem is communicating with the telephone line.
1Choose Control Panels from the Apple menu. Double-click the Sound control panel icon.
2 Be sure the volume is set above the lowest mark.
3Close the Sound control panel.
Increasing the volume does not affect the status of your modem. It just allows
you to verify that there is a dial tone when you try to open communications,
and that the modem can dial telephone numbers.
4 Open your communications software and enter terminal mode.
If you don’t know how to enter terminal mode, see your communications
software user’s guide. Terminal mode means that any characters that you type
on your keyboard will be sent to your modem and that any characters
received by your computer from your modem will be displayed on your
screen.
5Try dialing your own telephone number.
You’ll hear a busy signal if you are properly connected.
